Teacher Leader Cadre


The TLC steering committee includes FOCUS! district personnel, the TLC Math and Science Directors, and the UCI MSOC directors. This committee has divided the work for year one into two categories to ensure that selected Teacher Leadership Cadre members are prepared in academic content and pedagogical strategies to be of significant service to their school.

Activities with elementary schools: Mathematics and science institutes are offered in anticipation of the recruitment of a Teacher Leader from each elementary school within the three partnership districts in year two. The curriculum for the institutes is aligned with the California Content Standards in both disciplines and integrates content activities with strategies for English Language Learners, literature, and various pedagogical techniques.

Activities with secondary schools: Two Teacher Leaders for each partner middle school and high school (one for math and one for science) are selected to form the initial TLC. To recruit and select the best candidates from each school requires close collaboration between school principals, district personnel, the TLC and MSOC directors, and FOCUS! project management. The selected Teacher Leaders attend a two-week intensive institute during the summer, designed by FOCUS! district personnel, UCI faculty, the TLC and MSOC directors. The leaders attend afterschool and Saturday meetings on standards-based activities to share at the school site, with emphasis given to student access and comprehension.
